As an arts student, with not much previous knowledge of computers, I enrolled myself in the how and why of computing not really knowing what to expect from it. I find the way in which Professor Heap conveys his points and information to his students very interesting and helpful. During the first week, Professor Heap explained how paper folding could create a pattern called an algorithm. When he began lecture by making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I began to question whether I was really going to learn anything about computers in this class. However it soon became clear to me that Professor Heap uses simple examples that we all understand to relate aspects of real life to aspects of computer science. This helped me to better understand the concepts that he was attempting to explain to us. I found it more fascinating than most lectures.
During the first couple of weeks we have also begun to use DrRacket. At first, this program seemed a bit daunting to me and I was not quite sure that I would be able to figure out how to use it or remember all of the commands. However, the videos that were posted online helped me to further my knowledge and understanding of how to use the program.
The first tutorial was quite disappointing. There are not enough computers in the computer lab for every student, so we were made to go into pairs. However, even with everyone in pairs there were still not enough computers! Unfortunately, I only got approximately 15 minutes on the computer.
I really enjoy the Professor and the TA’s in this class. I find them extremely nice and helpful with any questions. It creates a positive environment and motivates me to work harder to achieve success.
So far, it has been a great start to the semester! :)
